About

Hi, I'm Joe.
Most people online know me as sirgijoe.

I build things that make life a little easier, and I share as much of it as I can for free. This site is where all of it lives: my open-source projects, the digital goods I make, and some gear with the shield on it.

Where the name comes from

I dedicated over a decade of my life in the Army. My name is Joe, so my nickname and call sign was G.I. Joe. When I went to make an email address, GIJoe was already taken, so I added "Sir" to the front, like a knight. sirgijoe stuck, and it's been my name online ever since.

The crown The knight: the fantasy worlds I grew up loving, and the idea that what you build should be shared, not hoarded.
Three chevrons My rank when I left the Army: sergeant. A quiet reminder to do the job right and look after the people around you.
The shield Everything here is made to protect your time, your money and your privacy, not to take them.

What I believe

  • Free software mattersIf I can give something away, I will. My projects are open source so anyone can use them, learn from them and improve them.
  • Don’t ruin it for othersBuild things that help people. When a community turns toward taking advantage of people, I walk away.
  • Be straight with peopleClear licenses, honest descriptions and no tricks at checkout.
  • Made for everyoneTools should work for people who barely touch a computer, not just for programmers.

Life outside the code

Time is precious

My story is pretty simple: I'm a husband, father, grandfather and veteran. Living with brain cancer has taught me that our time here is precious, and that making the most of it is the most precious thing we can do.

Helping others, and working to make life a little easier and better for everyone — that's the legacy I want to leave behind. Everything on this site is part of it.
