Joe isn’t code-signed (that costs money every year, and Joe is free), so Windows may say “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only do this once.
Drag Joe onto Applications. The first time, macOS can’t check Joe because he isn’t registered with Apple: click Done, then System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway.
Make the file runnable (right-click › Properties › Allow executing, or chmod +x), then open it.
What Joe does
One window, a lot of help
How it works
A look inside
Straight answers
- Your work is done on your own PC by AI models you choose to install.
- Joe uses the internet for setup, downloading programs and models, update checks and a few features. It isn't an "offline" app, and it says so.
- Joe doesn't control third-party models, add-ons or services you connect. That choice is yours.
- Free, open source, no subscriptions.

Questions
Is Joe really free?
Yes. Joe is open source under the GPL-3.0 license: free to use, share and change. No subscriptions, no paid tiers.
Do I need to know about AI to use it?
No. Joe checks your PC, offers to install what he needs (with a checkbox for each thing) and picks models that fit your hardware.
Does Joe need the internet?
For setup, downloading programs and models, update checks and a few features, yes. The day-to-day work runs on your own PC.
What kind of PC do I need?
Writing works on most modern PCs. Pictures and especially video need a graphics card; the setup check tells you what yours can do.
